This fantastic shape has not been cut or moulded it just grew this way. Bismuth should form cubic crystals, but it has form these skeletal crystals instead. This occurs when the outside edges of the crystal grow more rapidly than the inside. Many minerals grow skeletal crystals; including ice, galena and halite.
