Ammolite is the preserved inner shell of an ammonite. Ammonite shells had three layers, all made of the calcium carbonate mineral aragonite, but with slightly different microstructures. The middle layer of the shell is made of nacre. The nacre has been mineralised over millions of years. The iridescent colour are due to very fine interference gratings within the preserved structure.
