raw Azurite on matrix

Azurite crystals on a carbonate rich matrix. Bou Azzer, Morocco

Azurite is a blue copper carbonate mineral. Azurite is somewhat unstable and is often replaced by malachite over long periods of time. The resultant crystals are often psuedomorphs, they have the structure of the original azurite, but have been entirely replaced by the second mineral. As there is some fluidity between the two minerals, they are intimately associated and frequently found together within the same sample.

Azurite is also used as pigment, but is not long lasting. It doesn't have the staying power of Lapis, the other famous blue pigment.
