Flexicalymene trilobite

Flexicalymene sp.
age: Ordivician (approx 465 million years old)
Locality: Lower Katou Formation,  Draa Valley, Morocco

This trilobite lived at the bottom of a shallow ocean. It ate detritus -- the left over bits of plants and animals which sink to the bottom of the water. We know how trilobites moved and fed because their movements are sometimes recorded in the sand and mud of the seafloor. The preserved movement trail or footprint of an animal is called a trace fossil.

These fossils are natural molds, rather than the preserved exoskeleton. The original material broke down. This left an empty space which was later filled with another material. These trilobites were found in nodules and cracked open. Nodules don't always break cleanly. These fossils are usually repaired before they can be sold.

Average weight, 120gThese trilobites are found in nodules and cracked open, it is not uncommon to see signs of repair. All prices are per item. Photographs are representative of the items on offer, but the item you buy may not be the one in the photograph
