Cave bear bone fragments

Cave bear bone fragments.
Ursus spelaeus
Pleistocene (80,000 - 60,000 years ago).
Hungary.

These fragments of bone date from the ice age. Cave bears and human co-existed; it has even been suggested that human activity led to cave bear extinction.

Cave bears were enormous, about the same size as a modern polar bear. Complete skeletons are a somewhat unsettling sight. Thankfully for humans, cave bears were largely herbivorous.

Collecting material from inside a cave is a definite no-no, as caves keep a good record of atmospheric conditions and preserve material well. These fragments came from the outwash of caves. Since the material has been strewing in local groundwater it is no longer possible to collect reliable DNA or similar data.
