Bivalves and gastropods from the Paris Basin.

Bivalves and gastropods in marl
Location: Paris Basin, Bordeaux, France
Age: Miocene (21 million years ago).

The Paris Basin formed during the Variscan orogeny and covers an extensive area, including Belgium, and parts of Southern England. The beds date from the Triassic, but the area is best known for the diversity of Eocene aged shells. Shells can give important clues about paleoenviroments, and can be used to gauge local and global temperature conditions at the time when the animals lived.

The Paris Basin has been very well studied and documented, and Cuvier's work in the 1800s helped build our modern understanding of stratigraphy.
