Moldavite

Moldavite is one of 4 very well studied types of tektite and was formed during the Reiss Crater Impact event in Bavaria, Germany, which occurred about 14.8 million years ago. The impact crater is so large that a city exists within it. Moldavite has a relatively small strewn field and is found exclusively in sites in the Czech republic.  Like all tektites, moldavite has a low water content and is slightly harder than window glass (you should be able to scratch a window with moldavite, but a shard of glass won't scratch a tektite). The wrinkled surface rind is due to de-vitrification; a breakdown of glass in soil.
