Ammolite

Ammolite. Alberta, Canada

Okay, okay. This one is seriously a little bit cool. It is the preserved mother of pearl from the hell of an ammonite that lived 75 million years ago in a tropical ocean.

Ammonite shells were made of three layers of aragonite, each of which served a difference unction and was structurally different. The nacre is the middle layer. It preserves well in the right conditions, but only ammonite nacre from Canada can be sold as ammolite. Ammolite is trademarked and is the only fossil that is recognised as a gemstone by the GIA.

Item weight 8g. This photograph is of the item offered for sale.
