Biotite

Biotite, Spain

One of the two main groups in the mica family. Mica is an aluminium silicate which typically splits into thin sheets along one plane. These sheets often look bewilderingly like sheets of plastic film. Mica expands and contracts when heated. Muscovite (white mica) was historically used a windows in furnace doors, or as translucent covers for lanterns and gaslights. All varieties of mica are used in electronic capacitors, as they maintain the same values during extreme changes in temperature.
