Desert rose

Selenite desert rose, Mexico.

Desert roses are formed in arid areas, by seasonal fluctuations in water levels. The water in these areas evaporates more rapidly than it can be replaced, and precipitates crystals from the chemicals which had previously been dissolved in the water.  Each desert rose represents several cycles of this process. The most common desert roses are gypsum (calcium sulphate), or baryte (barium sulphate).
