Pyrite cocas
(Peru)
Iron pyrite is sometimes also called Fool's Gold. This is because it is often found in areas where you would find gold. When iron pyrite and gold are in water the light reflects off them in the same way -- so they look very similar. This would be very annoying if you were panning for gold.
Gold is much more dense than pyrite. If you were sieving gold and Fool's gold flakes, real gold would settle at the bottom of your pan, while Fool's Gold would be at the top. Do you know why this would be the case? There are some other important differences between gold and fool's gold. Can you find some more?
This item comes with an information sheet about gold and fool's gold and is a good item for home school and self-directed learning.
