Lapis Lazuli. Afghanistan

Lapis has been mined since early in human history and has a rich folklore. At one point it was the basis for Ultramarine, the most expensive pigment in the world. The Virgin Mary's blue veil is blue because painters used the most extravagant colour in their palate to honour her.  It is particularly associated with wisdom and leadership and represents the acquisition of knowledge and its wise use.
