One of the three polymorphs of Al2SiO5. Polymorphs are minerals which have the same chemical composition and formula but different lattice structures. These three polymorphs all form within distinct temperature and pressure ranges. As such they can be used to gauge the pressure and temperature history of some metamorhic rocks. Sillimanite, in particular, is quite persistent, so cannot be used as the sole indicator.
