Grasslands and grazers
All modern animal lineages had evolved by the miocene including apes. The earth's surface became dominated by grasslands and savannahs, and evolution favoured solutions to these environments. Kelp forests started to grow in the ocean for the first time, this provides a new and important ecosystem. The world starts to look recognisably like that of today. By the end of the era all of the continents are close to their modern configurations.
