this is the most likely candidate for the viking sunstone used for navigation. the vikings' used the natural bi-refringence of the mineral to help them find the sun even when the sky was over cast.
Like all calcite, optical calcite is directional. It is particularly good for way finding and putting one's feet on the right path.
