Dactylioceras nodule

Ammonite nodule
Dactylioceras sp.
Age: Jurassic (178 million years ago)
Location: Whitby, UK

On the outside this simply looks like a boring grey rock, but it has been tapped open to show the fossil inside. Fossils have a somewhat rich mythos in the UK. In the north of England these ammonites were called St. Hilda's snakes and were said to be coiled serpents turned to stone.
