Jack hill metasediment

Jack Hills metasediments. Jack Hills Region, West Australia.

This rock isn't ALL THAT old -- a mere 2.6 billion years or so. However it contains grains of the oldest mineral on earth -- Jack Hill zircons. They have been dated at 4.4 billion years old and also show the first evidence for surface water.

Zircons are very robust. They easily outlast the rocks they formed in.  They are the only known remnants of the earth's first landmass surrounded by the earth's first ocean.

Average weight, 23g. Prices are per item. This photograph is representative of the item for sale, but the item you receive may not be one in this photograph.
