The key to mahogany obsidian is viscosity. The magma has separated into two slightly different viscous fluids. One of the fluids contains more iron oxides than the other (this gives the obsidian a red appearance). The fluids are so viscous that they can't mix together. so when the magma cools one portion of the obsidian is red while the other is black.
