Quartz frequently contains impurites of iron and aluminium. These give quartz a smoky appearance when it is exposed to radiation. Smoky quartz can range in colour from a pale yellowish grey all the way up to black. The colour is due to the intensity of the radiation and the length of time that the sample was exposed. It is unusual to find very black pieces of smoky quartz naturally.
Very dark samples of smoky quartz have usually been artificially irradiated to enhance their colour. Although samples have been exposed to radiation, they are not radioactive. This is unlikely to be completely true of the rock they were found in.
