Strelley pool Stromatolites Age: Archean (approximately 3.4 billion years old) Location: Strelley Pool Formation, Pilbara, Western Australia
At one point these stromatolites were the oldest known fossils. They are well studied for their evidence for early life on earth. They are also of particular interest to astrobiologists, who look at the evolution of life in the conditions of early Earth and use this to predict conditions for life on other planets.
