Garnet

Garnet forms in metamorphic rocks. Metamorphic rocks do not become molten, but they are subject to such extreme changes in temperature and pressure that the component minerals in the rock change to different minerals. Certain minerals only form at particular temperatures and pressures. When present in a rock they indicate that the rock was subject to these temperature and pressure conditions at some point in time. Minerals that indicate the metamorphic history of a rock are called index minerals. Garnet is an important index mineral.
